Getting a Job in Singapore

We get lots of questions all the time from fresh grads who wish to come to Singapore and start their career.

Most companies wont hire them unless they show sufficient related work experiences . These 'global students' are not looking for big expat packages, in fact they are only looking to be paid like any other local employee. Here are some tips that can help you get your feet into the door of some companies in Singapore.

1. Look for internships at respected firms in your industry. Most local companies might already be swamped with interns from the polytechnics and the local universities so you would really need to stand out to be offered a position.

2. Offer to intern for free for a short period, If you believe strongly and have passion for a job in a particular industry you should approach relevant companies if they would accept volunteers , most companies would be glad to accept you but are quite bothered by the visas and other documentation that will be involved. The best period would be 2 months, by then your employer can sufficiently see if you would be an asset to the company and offer you a full time position.

3. Attend trade shows and events and speak to people that are currently working at companies which you wish to work for. Do not ask for a job or an internship position at the first chance. Get to know more about the company and see how you would fit in, and if you are interested talk about the possibility of being an intern at that particular company.

4. Post a message on one of the local expat forums , you never know there might be some kind expatriates out there who would offer you a great position , renumeration might be an issue at first but don't let that hinder you.

5. Last , if all methods fail . Submit your resume to job agencies or internship placement agencies in Singapore and get them to help you with your career.

Good luck in your pursuit of happiness.
